Public Humanities

Festival in the Philippines

Overview

This cluster seeks to design and implement projects and programs that will enhance the humanities’ engagement with the public audience and extend the classroom and research work to the public sphere (e.g., engaged teaching, engaged scholarship, public programming). Significant questions that we shall initially ruminate on include: What contemporary socio-political issues, and humanistic and cultural concerns shall we address (e.g., ML injustices, ableism, medical humanities)? What radical modes of engaged research and knowledge production can we adopt? What communities can we involve in our programs and projects? This cluster hopes to create more avenues for community conversation, participation, and collaboration. Possible outputs: community dialogue, workshop, public art exhibit, curriculum design, teaching modules, website.

Program 1: Training Workshop on Social Justice and Civic Engagement

Partner/Community: Bantayog ng Bayani

Description: Engaged research. DLSU faculty and students partner with Bantayog ng Bayani resource persons to investigate issues on social justice in the Philippine contexts and to experience training in civic engagement activities.

Program 2: Mini Conference and Workshop on Contemporary Issues

Proposed topics: Disability studies in the Philippines; Asian Pop

Partner/Community: National Council on Disability Affairs, Chulalongkorn University

Description: Engaged research and scholarship. Mini conference and workshop on selected research papers that examine two significant topics in the Philippine and Asian settings: disability studies in the Philippines and Asian popular cultures. Participation in the conference workshop will be selective. Community dialogues and cultural immersion can be integrated into the conference workshop. Output will be book publication or website.

Program III: Dialogue on Art & Public Engagement Curriculum Design

Partner/Community: Humanities departments; DLSU Integrated School Arts & Design Track Coordinators and Faculty
